The Sikorsky S-42 was a commercial flying boat designed and built by Sikorsky Aircraft to meet requirements for a long-range flying boat.


The S-42 was a parasol-winged, four-engine, twin-tailed flying boat made by the American company Sikorsky. It was an improved version of the S-40 flying-boat. Intended as an airliner, the S-42 required a crew of four and could carry up to thirty-seven passengers (fourteen for sleeping), reach speeds of 182 mph (293 km/h; 158 kn) while at 5,000 ft (1,500 m) above sea level, and could cover a range of 1,200 mi (1,043 nmi; 1,931 km).
